Guwahati: The City Police on Sunday arrested Hiranya Saikia, a member of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA)-constituted People’s Consultative Group (PCG), based on a confessional statement of a self-styled sergeant of the outfit, who was arrested on Saturday.
Earlier, a senior ULFA leader and commander of the outfit’s 28 Battalion Mrinal Hazarika was released on bail from the Dibrugarh jail.
Mr. Saikia is the second PCG member to be arrested. Human right activist Lachit Bordoloi had earlier been arrested by the city police on February 11 along with an Air Deccan executive in connection with an alleged hijack plot by the ULFA.
Additional Superintendent of Police Debojit Deori told The Hindu that Mr. Saikia was arrested under Section 10/13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act following a confession by the arrested ULFA leader that he had come to receive instructions from Mr. Saikia that were passed on by the top ULFA hierarchy.
“As revealed by Asim Gowala, the instructions that he had come to receive from Mr. Hiranya Saikia were of a volatile nature like targeted killing, bomb blasts that were to be carried out by the ULFA’s 28 battalion. We had no other option but to arrest him…,” Mr Deori said.
