The oppressive heat is taking a toll on them

GULBARGA: The heat wave in Gulbarga district has made life miserable. A majority of the people remain indoors most of the day. After 11 a.m., all roads, except the ones in markets, are deserted.

The sizzling weather, with the day temperature for the first time this year shooting up to 45 degrees Celsius, has, however, come as a boon for fruit and juice stall owners, who are doing brisk business.

The most sought-after commodity during summer is tender coconut.

On an average, at least two truckloads of tender coconut, which arrive from central and south Karnataka, vanish from local markets in a jiffy. Tender coconut, which was available for Rs. 7 earlier, now costs Rs. 13.

Watermelon, which is also in great demand, is being sold at Rs. 15 a kg. The fruit was earlier available for Rs. 5 a kg.

Activity in Gulbarga city begins and ends early for the common man during summer. Except for one or two summer showers in April that brought some relief to the people, there has been no rain in May. During May, most parts of Gulbarga district usually receive one or two showers, bringing the much needed relief to the people.

The worst affected are elderly persons and children, who are susceptible to dehydration. Hospitals here have reported several cases of dehydration this year owing to the heat wave conditions.

It is common to see people coming out with masks and gloves to protect themselves from the sun.
