One person was killed and 14 others, including five women, were injured when a tourist van in which they were travelling from Erode to Rasipuram reportedly went out of control and rammed a roadside tree near Sekarapatti village in Tiruchengode taluk on Sunday.

Elachipalayam Police, who registered a case and is investigating, said that the van was carrying 15 persons, including the driver, for promotional activity of a private insurance firm. Inspector S. Murugan said that the vehicle was near Sekarapatti village when the accident took place.

It is said that the van driver Anwar Basha (36) reportedly lost control of the vehicle and turned it to the extreme right side of the road, ran into a neem tree and then fell on its side. Locals, who heard the crashing sound of the vehicle, rushed to the spot and rescued the victims.

They were taken to a private hospital in Tiruchengode. Dhanapal (32), of Kodumudi in Erode district, who was seriously injured was referred to an Erode hospital but died on the way, police said. Priya (23), Sathyamoorthi (29), Mullai (30), and Basha (36), who sustained serious injuries were admitted in the ICU.

Ten other persons who escaped with injuries were Selvakumar (23), Prem Kumar (22), Madumitha (22), Senthil Kumar (23), Sabeer Mohammed (31), Kalaivani (23), Anbu Murugan (34), Kogilajothi (25), Maria Infanto Leo (22) and Saravanan (23) – all from Erode district.
