Electricity consumers (Low Tension) do not have to wait in long queues braving the hot sun or rain to pay their electricity charges. The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) commissioned an Automatic Bill Payment machine at Tatabad, here on Wednesday and plans to have 11 more in the city shortly.

Chief Engineer A. Thangavelu told The Hindu on Wednesday that the city would have totally 20 machines and 20 more would be installed in Tirupur District. Five more would be commissioned in places such as Thudiyalur, Seeranaikenpalayam and Saravanampatti.

All the 45 machines in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts would be in operation in a couple of months.

Consumers would be able to deposit cheque or demand draft for the bimonthly current consumption charges or pay by cash using the machine.

They would get a receipt for the payment. The machines would be maintained by Forbes Technologies.

The cheques and demand drafts would be cleared everyday.

The machine at Tatabad could be used during office hours on all working days and timings would soon be extended to 24 hours, seven days a week.

Consumers should feed the 10-digit electricity service number to make the payment.

Mr. Thangavelu said over 25,000 consumers were already paying through the online facility and with increasing awareness about these facilities, the number of people coming to the respective regional counters to pay their bills would come down.
