CHENNAI: Most students of the Chennai Corporation’s model school for students with muscular dystrophy are not able to attend classes. Out of the 42 students on the rolls, only seven are attending classes.
“Many of them are not able to come to the school as the special buses meant for such students are not yet ready,” said one of the parents. As most are wheelchair-borne, bringing them to school in any other vehicle is a very challenging task, said H.Aruna, a parent. At the inauguration of the school in August, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had said he would ensure that the buses were made available. A special bus with a lift system costs Rs.18 lakh and for 42 students two buses are required, said V. Viswanathan, founder-president of Muscular Dystrophy Association.
