A newborn baby girl was found dead in a garbage dump near the north entrance of Sri Perianayaki Amman Temple here on Monday. Police said the body was sent to the Palani Government Hospital for post-mortem. On information, senior police officers visited the spot. Sources in the hospital said the body bore injury marks around the neck. The baby might have been strangulated with a cloth. The police are conducting enquiries as to whether the baby was killed somewhere else and dumped here.
Shopkeepers in the area said an awareness of the importance of installing closed circuit television cameras should be created in the temple town, which had a huge floating population. Round-the-clock surveillance would prevent offenders from committing such crimes, they added. A senior police officer said apart from conducting enquiries with some suspects, who were posing as guides, the police teams were also visiting a few primary health centres in the area. “The PHC records on newborn cases and complaints of missing babies may give us some leads,” he added.
About seven months back, the police found the body of a newborn female baby on the roadside under Swaminathapuram police limits, another officer said.
