Even as work on the construction of a new building for the District Central Library here on an outlay of Rs. 3.74 crore is expected to be completed by next year, the Department of Public Libraries has planned to construct a building for the government branch library at Thuraiyur.
“The district administration has allotted a site for constructing the library and the Department of Public Libraries has initiated a plan to construct the building at an estimated cost of about Rs.40 lakh,” official sources said. The facility would be a boon to book lovers in and around Thuraiyur.
Meanwhile, work on constructing the building for the District Central library near Singarathope, in place of an old building that was demolished a few years ago, is under way in full swing. The new library would have a total plinth area of 34,000 sq. feet. in the ground and first floors.
It would have special sections for women and children, reference, Internet browsing and reading.
Transport Minister K. N. Nehru has assured that additional funds would be provided if necessary for this project. There were also proposals to start libraries at E.B. Colony and on the campus of the Armed Reserve police campus and for starting part-time libraries at Ellakudi near Kattur and Vasan Nagar.
A total of 2,700 patrons had been enrolled so far in various government libraries in the district.
