The State police will soon extend its neighbourhood watch scheme to 148 more police station jurisdictions, Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has said.
He was inaugurating a seminar on ‘Women and child safety’ here on Monday.
Mr. Radhakrishnan said the government would create 740 more posts for extending the scheme. The Home Department would bring all marginalised and poor sections of society, including Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, into the scheme.
He said there had been a marked drop in the crime rate. The police had successfully kept peace, even in communally sensitive localities and times. There had been no communal riots in the State since the United Democratic Front government came to power. There had also been a welcome absence of political murders in the State.
