Mystery shrouds the death of five members of a Kolkata family whose charred bodies were recovered from their home where a fire broke out in the Regent Park area on Monday.
Police officers investigating the case suspect the possibility of foul play as all the bodies were recovered from a single room and one of the bodies bore injury marks. A sharp weapon was also found from the scene along with a container of kerosene.
Since the house was locked from inside, the police suspect that one of the family members may have killed the others before committing suicide.
The dead were identified as Supratim Bose, his father Sudesh Bose, his two daughters Sarali and Saheli and his wife Sangita Bose.
“We are exploring all possible angles, including murder,” said a senior police officer at the City Police Headquarters.
The fire service was alerted by neighbours after they heard a loud explosion and saw flames coming out of the building in the wee hours of the day.
The fire-fighters broke open the door of the flat on the second floor of the four-storied house and found five charred bodies. The source of the fire could not be ascertained.
The family's pet dog was also found dead in the room while another dog was rescued alive by the fire-fighters from the apartment.
Later in the day a team of forensic experts visited the house and collected samples. The bodies were sent for post-mortem.
Police are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of the tragedy.
Eyewitness said that at around 2.15 a.m. they heard a loud explosion and flames coming out from the third floor of the building. However, they heard no screams or cries for help from inside the flat, they added.
