The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has empanelled Periyar Technology Business Incubator (TBI) attached to the Periyar Maniammai University, Vallam, as category-1 ‘Udyami Mitra' (Entrepreneur's friend) under the Rajiv Gandhi Udyami Mitra Yojana introduced for promoting and hand-holding the Micro and Small Enterprises.
The string of Entrepreneurship Development Training Programmes (EDP) and Entrepreneurship Skill Development Training Programmes (ESDP) that the Periyar TBI, a grant-in-aid project from Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, has been conducting in Tiruchi, Thanjavur and other districts stood it in good stead for the empanelment.
The Periyar Technology Business Incubator conducted the trainings in fabrication, artificial jewel making, and value addition from banana crop in partnership with the MSME Ministry's National Institute of Micro Small and Medium Entrepreneurship (ni-msme), and the Tiruchi-based R.K. Charitable Trust.
It was in recognition of the difficulties faced by new entrepreneurs even after prior trainings to run their enterprises successfully that the MSME Ministry evolved the scheme.
Since the SSI sector fosters employment-oriented economic growth, the mandate of the empanelled entities is to enable entrepreneurs to avail themselves of the full benefits under available schemes of the governments or financial institutions; to comply with various formalities and legal requirements under various laws/regulations, in selection of appropriate technology, and to facilitate tie-ups with buyers and sellers.
According to C. Ramaswamy Desai, Project Director, Periyar TBI, the scheme envisages bridging the gap between the aspirations of potential entrepreneurs and ground realities through hand-holding support in the initial stages to manage their enterprises.
On behalf of the first-time entrepreneurs, the Periyar TBI will network and coordinate with government departments and agencies, and regulatory agencies, besides support agencies like banks and financial institutions, District Industries Centres, technology providers, and infrastructure providers.
To help entrepreneurs
Udyami Mitras are expected to help first-generation entrepreneurs in identification of suitable project and preparation of bankable project report, creation of proprietorship firm, and render assistance all through their functioning.
For each enterprise, a web page and an e-mail identity will also be created, Mr. Desai said.
