Majlis-Ittehadul-Muslimeen (MIM) has staked claim for the post of Mayor of GHMC in tune with the seat sharing understanding it reached with the Congress two years ago.

According to the understanding between the Congress and the MIM, the present Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy is supposed to relinquish office on December 4 and the latter is now insisting that the ruling party keep its word given in 2009. In the absence of a clear majority for either of them in the 150-member strong house, the two parties had agreed to share the Mayor's office for two years each while the Congress candidate would be back at the helm during the fifth and final year.

As the deadline for Ms. Karthika Reddy to step down approaches, MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi met APCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana here on Friday as a follow up to the letter written by MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi earlier this week seeking Mayor's post for the Majlis for the next three years (although the agreement allows it only two years).

Mr. Satyanarayana reportedly told Mr. Akbaruddin that the Congress wanted to continue in office for one more year. He told the MIM floor leader that he would convey the party's decision after discussing the issue with Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy.
