SRINAGAR: An Army Major and a soldier were killed by militants in the Bandipore area of north Kashmir on Tuesday night.

Defence Ministry spokesman Lt.Col. J.S. Brar said the troops were closing in on Chattibandi village to flush out militants hiding in nearby woods. All of a sudden, the militants opened fire, causing injuries to Major Yoginder Rajbar and Sipahi Uttam, both of 7 Gharwal Rifles. They died in the military hospital. A senior police officer told The Hindu that the militants escaped from the area.
