Notorious Durban road seeks makeover with a new name
Durban: Apparently seeking to give a notorious street in the centre of town a moral facelift, the authorities here plan to rename it after Mahatma Gandhi. Point Road is now a known hub of vice.
"I know a lot of people will have problems with this decision, but I am delighted," the granddaughter of the Mahatma, Ela Gandhi, said.
A former MP for the African National Congress, now chairperson of the Satyagraha Foundation in South Africa, she hoped that with the new name the street would gain a regenerated face.
The Mahatma, who established the Natal Indian Congress in 1894, was one of the two Indians selected for recoginition by the municipal authorities. The other is Dr. Yusuf Dadoo, who was leader of the South African Indian Congress. Grey Street and Broad Street will be named after him. PTI
