In a shocking incident, Maharashtra Leader of Opposition and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Eknath Khadse’s son Nikhil shot himself in the head with his own pistol in the State’s Jalgaon district on Wednesday.

According to local party sources, the incident took place late afternoon at the Khadse’s ancestral home in Muktainagar taluk, more than 450 km from here.

The reason for 37-year-old Nikhil Khadse’s suicide is unclear as yet.

His body was immediately airlifted and rushed to Jalgaon’s Godavari hospital, where he was declared dead, said sources. He has subsequently been shifted to the Jalgaon Civil Hospital where an autopsy will be conducted.

The funeral is scheduled to take place in Muktainagar on Thursday.
