THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Fishermen Debt Relief Commission has recommended to the government full waiver of loans totalling Rs.121.30 crore taken by 56,695 fish workers across the State.
In its report submitted to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan by commission chairman K.K. Dinesan, former judge, Kerala High Court, here on Wednesday, the commission said it had arrived at the amount to be waived after considering applications from 1,09,555 persons. The commission had found that a majority of the applications were defective and organised help desks with the help of the Fisheries Department in all coastal districts and Kottayam to rectify the defects.
Speaking on the occasion, Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said that the Cabinet would take up the recommendations of the commission within a fortnight and take appropriate decisions in the matter.
