Can you believe this? Alleged bookie Jiju Janardanan played in the local A-Division three-day league cricket championship conducted by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) in the 2012-13 season.

For someone who is now in the thick of the ‘spot-fixing’ scandal and said to be very close to arrested Rajasthan Royals cricketer S. Sreesanth, Jiju Janardanan played for a local team owned by a former executive committee member of the HCA. The team is known to encourage ‘outstation’ players to play for it in the local league.

Some of the players who featured against him say on condition of anonymity, that Jiju looked a simpleton and polished at the same time. “We never ever thought that we would find his name in this controversy given his pretty decent behaviour then,” says a senior Hyderabad cricketer.

Meanwhile, the city was in the grip of rumours that police from Mumbai and Delhi had descended on Thursday in search of more information into the controversy.

However, HCA officials said that no police personnel visited their office or the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, venue of the eight IPL home games this season.
