"CHENNAI: Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Friday said All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa owed an explanation to people on the strategy adopted by her party legislators in the Presidential election.
Replying to a set of questions, Mr. Karunanidhi said as one who knew her well, he was not surprised by Ms. Jayalalithaa’s statement that the AIADMK MPs and MLAs had themselves decided to cast their vote.
On Ms. Jayalalithaa’s statement that she had gone out of Chennai in the early hours of Thursday and returned only in the afternoon, Mr. Karunanidhi said though the AIADMK leader did not convene a meeting of the party legislators on July 18, in the wake of the Election Commission’s press note on July 17, she could have conveyed her suggestions to senior leaders by inviting them to her place.
If she was not interested in meeting them, who prevented her from consulting lawyers and giving her advice over telephone, he asked.
She did not employ the option of sending word to all legislators through one member.
Through her statement, Ms. Jayalalithaa had admitted that the party legislators had cast their vote without her advice, Mr. Karunanidhi said.
The development showed that the party leader and legislators had taken different decisions on the poll.
