An IPS officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector General — S.M. Iqbal — has sent his resignation letter to the Director General of Police with a copy marked to the Chief Secretary in protest against the proposal to create Rayala-Telangana.

Sources said Mr. Iqbal, a direct recruit DSP of the 1987 batch who was conferred IPS in 1999 and is presently working in APSP, was upset that his dreams to promote education for children in Rayalaseema after retirement were shattered. He had five years service left. Mr. Iqbal was born in Kurnool and educated in Hindupur of Anantapur district. He shared a close bond with Rayalaseema and was of the view that the region had its own cultural identity which had to be protected. The IPS officer was the chief security officer of former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for five years.

In his resignation letter, he cited personal reasons.
