Security inside campus to be strengthened
MADURAI: Following the clash between two groups of students on Madurai Kamaraj University on Friday, the university administration has decided to allow only persons with identity card into the premises.
The move comes amidst complaints that some “outsiders” had entered the campus and attacked students during the youth festival. Three persons were injured in the clash.A peace committee, comprising Syndicate members, senior officials and hostel warden, was formed on Saturday to restore normality.
“We will immediately strengthen campus security. It will be a high profile from now on and the first measure is making ID card mandatory for entering the campus,” R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Vice-Chancellor, told The Hindu.
Police were called in the early hours of Friday as the university witnessed violent scenes/protests due to a clash between two groups of students.
Officials suspect that some ‘outsiders’ had entered the campus carrying knives and attacked the students.
The Controller of Examinations, S. Shanmugiah, who is handling the issue in the absence of Vice-Chancellor/Registrar, said that the university had sought police deployment for a week.
“Students in our hostels are insisting that entry for outsiders be restricted and that visitors should be checked,” said Dr. Shanmugiah who is also a member of the peace committee.
The Registrar I. Singaram is the convenor of the committee. Syndicate members -- S. Perumal, N. Saraswathy, N. R. Mohan, A. K. Kumaraguru and R. Kathiresan – along with Dr. Shanmugiah, S. Krishnaswamy, M. Manivel (Students’ Welfare Officer), B. S. Chandrababu and V. Vasu (hostel warden) are its members.
