: The government higher secondary schools in the central region, comprising eight revenue districts, have brought out impressive results in the Plus Two examinations, proving their competence on a par with the well-endowed aided and private schools.
The sterling performance has yet again proved that government schools are second to none in terms of quality in teaching.
A total of eight government higher secondary schools have achieved cent per cent results. Tiruchi district has topped the list with three schools, including the one run by the City Corporation, registering the magic figure. Two schools in Thanjavur district, and one each in Karur, Pudukottai and Ariyalur districts, have achieved this honour.
The Government HSS, Peruvalappur, the Government Adidravidar Welfare HSS, Keelaanbil and the Corporation HSS, Tiruchi, are the three schools where all the students who appeared for the examinations held in March came out successfully. It is a dubious distinction for the Corporation School, for this was the first batch to appear for the public examinations after the institution was upgraded into a higher secondary school.
Special coaching by teachers proved to be vital factor for the achievement, says S. Ramesh, headmaster of the Government HSS, Maramadakki. He said special coaching was given to all the 96 students till 8 p.m. everyday. Besides special sessions were also conducted on Sundays, since January this year. The cooperation extended by the students and parents for the initiative of the school authorities is appreciable, Mr. Ramesh says.
A good number of government schools had missed the cent per cent achievement by narrow margins could be gauged from the fact that as many as 89 schools in these eight districts have achieved results 90 per cent and above. The highest tally of 32 schools was registered in Thanjavur district, followed by 13 schools in Tiruchi district, 11 in Nagapattinam, 10 each in Karur and Pudukottai, six in Perambalur, four in Ariyalur and three in Tiruvarur.
The achievement by a few schools, despite missing the magic mark, is quiet appreciable, as compared to the large strength of students who appeared for the public examinations.
For instance, the Government Girls HSS, Manachanallur registered 97.81 per cent achievement. As high as 457 students appeared for the exams, of which 447 have come out successful. This school managed 99.72 per cent last year and 99.71 per cent the year before.
