Brutalised and gang-raped by four persons in a moving bus before being thrown out of the vehicle on the outskirts of South Delhi on Sunday night, a 23-year-old girl is battling for life at Safdarjung Hospital here.

Late on Monday evening, the police said they had made a breakthrough in the case with the arrest of a suspect and the impounding of the bus used in the crime.

The suspect has been identified as Ram Singh, the bus driver.

The vehicle was tracked down to neighbouring Noida, following which the police zeroed in on the driver and arrested him. He has reportedly confessed that the gruesome incident took place inside the bus. The vehicle has been taken for forensic examination and collection of evidence. A hunt has been launched for the other suspects.

The incident took place around 9-30 p.m. on Sunday when the victim along with her male friend were returning home from a mall in Saket. They took an auto-rickshaw to a bus shelter in Munirka on Outer Ring Road from where they boarded a “contract carriage” luxury bus towards Palam. The bus, which the police said had tinted glasses, had only four other passengers besides the couple. As indicated by the victims, the police believe that the bus driver and the cleaner knew the four passengers. “Some of the passengers passed nasty remarks on the girl, and an argument ensued between them and the boy. The four men beat up the boy with iron rods inside the moving bus,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) Chhaya Sharma earlier in the day.

Victims robbed

The group then pounced on the girl, dragged her to the driver’s cabin where they forced themselves on her. They also robbed the two victims of their belongings before throwing them out of the bus on National Highway-8 near the Mahipalpur flyover around 10-15 p.m., a few kilometres away from where they boarded the bus.

A passer-by spotted the injured and bleeding victims, who were in a state of shock, and called the police.

The police reached the spot and rushed the victims to Safdarjung Hospital where the girl is currently on ventilator support, the police said.

According to hospital sources, the girl whose face and stomach were injured, was bleeding profusely when brought in for treatment.
