KARAIKAL: Construction of an indoor stadium in Karaikal has come to a grinding halt due to the delay in release of fund by the Puducherry Government.
The government had taken up the construction of the huge sports stadium at a cost of Rs.7 crore in conformity with international standards. The construction of the indoor stadium, with a plinth area of 3,600 square metres, is a vital component of the project.
Sources said that the civil contract was given in April last year and work was scheduled to be completed within a year. But civil works have hit a roadblock, and about 40 per cent of the works were yet to be completed since the Puducherry Government had not released funds to the contractors.
After the completion of civil works, several works like electrification, central air-conditioning, etc., had to be taken up.
Sports enthusiasts and voluntary organisations in Karaikal told The Hindu that the indoor stadium would be a big boon as several national and international sports events in volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton, etc., could be conducted in South India. They emphasised that the Karaikal district administration and the Government should expedite the construction process.
