Four persons, including two women and an infant, were killed on the spot and four others sustained severe injuries when the Chennai-Mangalore Express ran over them near Mayanur between Tiruchi and Karur early on Wednesday morning.

To take dip in canal

The accident occurred when a group of devotees returning from Veerappur in Tiruchi district had got off their vehicle near Mayanur to take a dip in a branch canal of River Cauvery and to visit the Sri Sellandi Amman temple nearby. When they crossed the track just a couple of hundred metres off Mayanur station, the speeding express train ran over them.

The dead have been identified as N. Raman (55) of Thattambur Colony, Erode district; K. Ammasi (65) of Puliyampatti, Coimbatore district; P. Sathya (45) of Arachalur in Erode district and M. Durga Devi (aged two years) also of Arachalur.

The injured have been rushed to hospitals in Karur.

The train left after halting at the site and at Mayanur station for some time.

The bodies were to be shifted to Karur Government Hospital.
