Minister for Higher Education Damodar Rajnarsimha has sent a strong signal to Vice-Chancellors to follow the norms with regard to admissions strictly or else stringent action will be taken against them.
The Minister was speaking after the Dravidian University Vice-Chancellor C. Ramanaiah met him to explain the allegations of irregularities over the large scale Ph.D admissions. The university has admitted over 8,000 candidates for the Ph.D programme in just two years.
After an uproar over the issue, the government set up a two-member committee to inquire into the issue and it is said to have found fault with the Ph.D admission procedures.
The Minister gave 10 days to the Vice-Chancellor to explain his position on the committee's findings. He told the reporters later that he will not hesitate to cancel Ph.D admissions if they were done against rules.
In another development, the government has appointed K. Yadagiri as the Director of the Telugu Akademi.
