As many as five persons were killed and three injured when a gas tanker collided with a truck on National Highway 48, near Singapur in Alur taluk of Hassan district, on Sunday.
While four persons died on the spot, one person died on way to the government hospital in Hassan.
The victims were returning after attending a marriage party at Alur.
The gas tanker was going towards Bangalore when it collided with the going to Palya village from Alur.
Among the dead, Somashekhar (27), Gunda (25), Madhu (22) and Girish (21) belonged to Alur taluk. The driver of the gas tanker, whose identity could not be established, also died.
The injured have been identified as Sridhar, Dasharath and Anand.
Superintendent of Police Amit Singh visited the spot.
He said that among the injured, two were out of danger and one was being treated at the intensive care unit of the hospital.
The Alur police have registered the case.
A large crowd gathered at the accident spot and helped the police retrieve the bodies from the mangled metal.
Vehicular movement on the highway was affected for more than an hour.
