Almost all political parties, except the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Congress, came together at Rameswaram to register their protest against the long duration of power cut prevailing in the island town.
They took out a rally and staged a demonstration in front of the Tahsildar's office. The cadres of AIADMK, MDMK, BJP, DMDK, CPI and CPI (M) took part. They raised slogans against the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) for disconnecting power supply at night.
Power supply, which was disconnected around 11 p.m., resumed only at around 11 a.m. the next day. The situation was the same on Wednesday also. Supply was disrupted many times in the day. People found it extremely difficult to cook food in the absence of power. They could not fill water in overhead tanks too, they said.
Collector T.N. Hariharan said that a technical fault in the supply line was said to be the reason for the irregular power supply. The TNEB officials had been asked to expedite the repair work, he said.
