Despite sufficient storage in Athoor Kamarajar Dam and good flow in the Cauvery River, two major drinking water sources, Dindigul municipality has been struggling to supply drinking water to all the wards at least once in 10 days owing to poor distribution system.

The Congress, AIADMK and DMK-led state governments had implemented three drinking water projects — Athoor Kamarajar Dam in Athoor, Peranai drinking water scheme from Vaigai channel and Cauvery drinking water scheme from Karur — during their tenure to solve the acute drinking water crisis. No scheme has been able to quench the ever-growing thirst of residents in the town so far. Poor management and outdated and damaged pipelines and rampant power shortage are some valid reasons for such acute water shortage.
