Thousands of supporters assemble at Ambala
CHANDIGARH: A special CBI court in Ambala on Thursday extended the bail of Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh, head of Dera Sacha Sauda, till October 15 in two cases of murder and one of rape. He was also asked to approach the district and sessions court in Ambala to seek regular bail.
The proceedings were held under tight security as thousands of his supporters thronged Ambala.
Though the police sealed the key roads leading to the court and imposed prohibitory orders, hundreds of people managed to congregate at the nearby HUDA grounds.
The CBI had charged him with conspiracy in the murder of the former Dera manager, Ranjit Singh, in July 2002, and a Sirsa-based journalist, Ram Chandra Chhatrapati, in November 2001. He was also accused of raping a follower in Sirsa.
Schools and colleges in Ambala remained closed in the wake of the virtual siege of the city by Dera followers.
