‘It is scuttling debate on Sachar committee findings’

“BJP’s JPC demand unacceptable”

ATR does not contain anything substantive: Salim

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday came down heavily on the Bharatiya Janata Party for disrupting Parliament proceedings, saying that by such moves the Opposition party was helping to scuttle a debate on the findings of the Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee.

Terming the BJP’s demand for setting up a joint parliamentary committee to go into the nuclear deal with the United States “unacceptable,” CPI(M) leader in the Lok Sabha Basudev Acharia told reporters that the demand was “impractical.”

“In case of international treaty and agreements, there is so scope for Parliament for its ratification,” Mr. Acharia said.

Left parties have been pushing for a constitutional amendment to empower Parliament to have such an authority.

CPI(M) Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Mohammad Salim also criticised the BJP for disrupting proceedings in Parliament.

In the last session also, the Opposition party had forced an early adjournment so that the Sachar panel findings could not be discussed, he pointed out.

Need for discussion

“We have waited for so long. We need to have a discussion on this important issue,” he said adding that the Action Taken Report (ATR) did not contain anything substantive.

Mr. Salim said that his party wanted to have discussions on other issues such as agrarian crisis, joint naval exercises and security in the region.

He said that inviting the U.S. to the Bay of Bengal for exercises would not ensure a better security for the country. “We must have our own independent strategic perspective, an Asian perspective, than holding multi-lateral exercises.”
