Governor M. K. Narayanan expressed concern here on Thursday over the alleged assault on senior Trinamool Congress leader Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay inside the premises of the University of Calcutta and directed its Vice-Chancellor, Suranjan Das, to take steps to prevent a recurrence.

“He expressed concern over the incident and told me to take steps to prevent a recurrence,” Prof. Das told journalists after meeting Mr. Narayanan.

“The Governor told me that such incidents vitiate the academic atmosphere of educational institutions and that it is our responsibility to ensure that they do not occur,” Prof. Das said.

He said that Mr. Narayanan had called him to discuss the preparations of Indian Science Congress scheduled in January in the city.

Trinamool Congress leader Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, also the chief whip of the State Government in West Bengal Assembly, was allegedly assaulted by members of a rival section of employees union affiliated to the party on November 27.

After the incident the Trinamool Congress leader had demanded that the party should take action against those responsible and said that he will reconsider his association with the party if it fails to do so.

Prof. Das has formed a two-member probe committee to look into the matter. Mr. Narayanan also asked him to give him a copy of the committee’s report regarding the incident.
