MADURAI: The District Collector P. Seetharaman and Commissioner of Police (Madurai City) Abhash Kumar have been transferred.
A government order on Wednesday said that Mr. Seetharaman had been posted as District Collector, Cuddalore, and Mr. Abhash Kumar posted back to the Police Academy, Chennai. During the midst of the Lok Sabha election, Mr. Abhash was posted in the place of Mr. Nandabalan.
Madurai will have N. Mathivanan as its new Collector and Mr. Nandabalan will come back as Commissioner of Police.
It may be recalled that Opposition parties demanded the transfer of the top two officers in Madurai – Collector and Commissioner of Police – as they alleged that the bureaucrats were partisan in acting on the complaints lodged by them against the ruling party during electioneering.
The Election Commission replaced Mr. Nandabalan and posted Mr. Abhash Kumar, who ensured that the poll was conducted peacefully. There was no law and order problem reported from any pocket in the city police’s jurisdiction of Madurai Lok Sabha constituency. When Mr. Seetharaman took charge in November 2008 replacing the then Collector S.S. Jawahar, the district witnessed uneasy calm in Uthapuram village.
The frequent visits and direct interactions by officials restored peace in a phased manner, according to villagers. As for the conduct of Lok Sabha election too, Mr. Seetharaman ensured that there was a free and fair poll and even in the declaration of results, the procedures were followed as per EC norms, a senior official in the Chief Electoral Officer’s office said.
