MADURAI: Madurai Corporation on Saturday introduced spot clearance of petitions seeking property tax assessment. Special camps would be conducted in each ward on select days and property tax applications cleared and tax levied the same day.

The Mayor, G. Thenmozhi, inaugurated the camp for Ward 66,67 and 68 of West Zone in the presence of Corporation Commissioner, S. Sebastine.

Not only the people could get their buildings and additional constructions assessed for property tax but also process applications seeking transfer of name of property tax and splitting taxes for divided properties, Mr. Sebastine said.

The Corporation received complaints on delayed processing of applications. Besides, people complained that they were made to run from pillar to post for the clearance.

“It was not only that people suffered. The Corporation also suffered loss of revenue,” he said.

With the special camps the cash-strapped Corporation aims to bring in additional revenue to its coffers. All that the people need to do is bring relevant documents, including land document and filled-in property tax self-assessment forms.

All the officials would be available at the camp and, if necessary, the building would be assessed immediately and tax levied the same day.

The venue of special camp for the selected wards would be published in newspapers and pamphlets distributed to all buildings of the wards in advance.

Over 80 applications were disposed of on Saturday.

The West Zone Chairman, K. Nagarajan, North Zone Chairman, K. Esakkimuthu, Communist Party of India councillor, M. Ganesan, Chief Engineer, K. Sakthivel, and other officials were present.
