Several persons in the city have been receiving such phone calls from ‘tele-callers’ asking them to deposit money into their account for participating in the KBC programme. More than half a dozen professionals lost a total of Rs. 7.50 lakh falling prey to such calls. The ‘victims’ lodged complaints with the Cyberabad policeThey realised they were conned when the number from which they had received the calls was switched off. Most of the complainants are well educated, yet fell prey to the fraud and lost money, police officials said. Each complainant paid Rs.1.25 lakh in five instalments as directed by the hoax callers. The fraudsters first gave their bank account numbers to collect Rs. 25,000 for clearing the ‘auditions’.

They again called asking them to pay Rs. 25,000 claiming that their names got cleared. The fraudsters then collected another Rs. 75,000 for completing ‘other formalities’, the officials explained.

They said the fraudsters could have collected the phone numbers from Internet users and started making the calls.
