In what is being seen as a major embarrassment to the BJP Government ahead of the three-day Vishwa Kannada Sammelan, the Mayor of Belgaum, N.B. Nirvani, resigned to register his protest against the “humiliation” meted out by the Government in general and the district administration in particular.

He submitted his resignation letter under Section 10, Clause 5 & 7 of Karnataka Municipality Act, 1976, to the Deputy Mayor Dhanraj Gauli.

Confirming the resignation, Mr. Gauvli said Mr. Nirvani had expressed his disappointment over the alleged humiliation to him.

Not invited

Being a first citizen of the city, the Government or district administration failed to invite him for the inauguration of the sammelan or any other event of the conference.

Despite the advice of the former Mayor Siddangouda Patil to the district administration to take the Mayor into confidence and treat him with due respect, the Mayor was ignored.

Mr. Nirvani said that it was not an insult to just the Mayor as an individual but to the entire Belgaum city and the district.
