An Inspector of Police, M. Saravana Ravi, who was providing security to the Corporation officials during an eviction drive at Mathichiyam, was assaulted with an iron rod. The officer, attached to the K. Pudur police station, has been admitted to a private hospital for head injury.
The eviction on 1.25 acres of Corporation land allotted for park had been going on since morning on Sappani Temple Street. According to Corporation officials, the value of the evicted land is Rs.6 crore. A strong posse of policemen was deployed on the spot to assist the Corporation officials, led by Chief Town Planning Officer, M. Rakkappan. Mr. Ravi joined the bandobust team in the afternoon.
Several tiled houses and a few concrete-roofed houses constructed on the Corporation land were demolished with earth movers.
While the demolition was going on without any trouble, the family members of Saravanan (45), an office assistant in the Vadipatti Taluk office, and his neighbour, Vijaya, and a few others tried to prevent the officials from carrying out their work in the afternoon.
The police said that Saravanan’s wife Rajeswari and Vijaya attempted self-immolation by pouring kerosene on them. The inspector asked women police constables to prevent them from creating any untoward incident. Amidst chaos, her son Manikandan, attacked the inspector with an iron rod on his head, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Anna Nagar), Karunanithi, said.
The police booked a case of attempt to murder against nine persons. Six persons, including the family members of Saravanan, were arrested. The accused have been booked under Sections of the Indian Penal Code including for rioting with deadly weapon, for wrongful restraint and for hurting public servant to prevent him from discharging his duty.
