The Assam government on Wednesday formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe alleged rape and the death of a woman in Lakhimpur district.

The victim’s family lodged a First Information Report with the Boginadi police, alleging kidnapping, rape and murder of the woman after she died of her injuries on November 23. The police have so far taken two persons into custody.

Home Secretary G.D. Tripathi told The Hindu that the post-mortem report established that the woman died of “head injuries caused by blunt objects” and that “no penetrative assault” on the victim had taken place. According to the police, the woman was found unconscious and in a critical condition along National Highway 52.
