Says a study conducted by Madurai Kamaraj University

MADURAI: There is an increasing trend in average Madurai temperature in summer, according to a study conducted by Madurai Kamaraj University.

Based on the data available with the Indian Meteorological Department on Madurai over a period of 10 years (2000-2010) for the month of April, the daily maximum temperature recorded stood between 38.2 degree Celsius and 42 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature of 42 degree Celsius was recorded in 2004 as well as in 2010.

According to K. Muthuchelian, Head and Chairperson, School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources, MKU, the temperature is on an increasing trend by .055 degree Celsius per year since 2000. From the satellite as well as IMD data, it is inferred that the atmospheric temperature over Madurai city in the last 62 years is rising. Hence, the prevailing trend in summer is likely to continue in the coming years, he told ‘The Hindu' on Tuesday.

The study conducted on April 7 in different locations revealed that Periyar bus stand recorded 42 degree Celsius; Goripalayam 41.8; Simmakkal 41.6; Arapalayam 41.6; Palanganatham 41.5; Arasaradi 41.5 and Mattuthavani 41.1. However, the nearby rural areas showed a different temperature pattern with the maximum atmospheric temperature standing at 38.5 degree Celsius at Achampattu; 38.2 at Viraganur, 37.5 at Alagarkoil and 36.4 at Chatrapatti, Prof. Muthuchelian said.

The temperature variations in urban areas were caused by urbanisation, growth of vehicles and industrial activity. The green house gases were also playing a major role in the fluctuations, he noted.

The minimum mean atmospheric temperature was recorded during December 1955, according to the profile data collected from the NCEP/NCAR group of NASA, USA. As part of the study, it was observed that though the annual mean temperature showed variations, an increasing trend was evident by .025 degree Celsius per year since 1948. The temperature trend during summer season showed a rising trend by .033 degree C per every summer season from 1948 onwards, he added.
