HYDERABAD: TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao denied that his party wanted to pull down the Congress Government by forcing the resignations of Ministers and MLAs belonging to Telangana before the January 28 deadline.

Reacting to criticism by some leaders that he and the Telangana JAC had fixed the deadline with the aim of pulling down the government, Mr. Rao said here on Sunday evening that such an argument was advanced by his adversaries to gain political mileage. There was no place for politics in the current circumstances when the people of Telangana were involved in a struggle for their livelihood.

Resignations

He was addressing a meeting to mark the conclusion of a 120-km padayatra by 150 persons from Irukodu village of Siddipet mandal in Medak district demanding statehood for Telangana. The walk began from the village on January 21.

The TRS chief said the Ministers, MPs and MLAs of all parties in Telangana were asked to resign by January 28 to force the Central Government to concede statehood to the region. After all, they should reflect the aspirations of people who elected them. There was no question of dithering on resignations by that date.

Mr. Rao asked the Centre to announce formation of Telangana by the deadline to avoid precipitating the political crisis. The JAC would force the government to respond positively if it did not initiate steps immediately. He said the ongoing phase of the crisis was a testing time for elected representatives of the region as they were faced with the deadline. He counselled them to put in their papers as it was not good to remain in the posts when the people were agitated.

Appeal to students

Meanwhile, addressing cable operators of 10 Telangana districts at Narsapur, he urged the students not to commit suicide. He asked the master cable operators of the Telangana districts to chart out the plan for the proposed Telangana channel by the TRS. He said that the cable operators had an important role to play in the formation of Telangana.

Stressing the need for a separate TV channel to protect the interests of the region, the TRS president alleged that the managements of the present channels were not presenting the real picture to people. He said that these problems would be addressed once their own channel was in place.
