100 persons, officials, engineers from Madurai are engaged in work
The strengthening of the part of Pamban Railway Bridge that opens began on Thursday to enable it to withstand additional weight of train load.
As many as 100 persons, officials, engineers from Madurai are engaged in the work. A crane has been engaged to lift the massive iron rods.
The Tiruchi-Rameswaram and Rameswaram-Tiruchi passenger train services have been cancelled for a week to facilitate the strengthening work.
Trains will not be allowed to run on the bridge from 9 a.m. till evening for a few days.
Railway sources said that the work would take at least a few months for the completion. It would enable the Southern Railway to operate goods trains on Pamban Bridge, which was recently converted into broad gauge.
