: Consequent to the sudden spurt of chain snatchings here, the city police have constituted a special team in every range in an effort to prevent such offences.
The ‘range-wise’ teams have been formed in Cantonment, Fort, Golden Rock and Srirangam range with each of them headed by a sub inspector.
Every special party will function under the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) of the respective range.
Personnel forming part of the special teams would move in their respective jurisdiction in motorcycles in addition to the rounds being carried out by the ‘Alpha’ bike patrolling parties that were formed with the objective of preventing crimes on streets.
Instructions have been given to the special parties to move in their respective areas during morning and evening hours, police sources said adding that the personnel would be in plain clothes.
An analysis of the areas within the city limits where chain snatchings had been reported and the timings chosen by the culprits to carry out the strike had been done and special team members, accordingly, have been asked to move in those places as well.
Photographs of criminals across the State involved in chain snatchings were being collected through State Crime Records Bureau, a senior police officer here said.
Upon collecting them, the photographs would be circulated to the personnel of the special teams. The formation of the special teams was an effort to prevent chain snatchings in the city, the officer added.
