In a major twist to the investigation into the twin murder of Kolakkadan cousins that took place at Kuniyil near Areekode on June 10, the police on Wednesday arrested Parammal Mannilthodi Ahamed Kutty, 53, the first accused in the First Information Report.
The arrest of Mr. Ahamed Kutty, who is joint secretary of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in the Eranad Assembly constituency, has strengthened the suspicions of the involvement of IUML local leaders in abetting the crime.
Mr. Ahamed Kutty was arrested after having been questioned by the investigation team led by M.P. Mohanachandran, Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Narcotic Cell, at the latter’s office here on Wednesday afternoon.
His arrest was effected after scrutinising his voice in an incriminating speech he allegedly made at Kuniyil before the murder on February 20.
The police said he was arrested for conspiracy in the murder. They said he had prior knowledge about the plans to annihilate Kolakkadan Aboobacker and Kolakkadan Azad.
The duo was hacked to death at Kuniyil New Bazaar by a masked gang on June 10, in apparent revenge for the death of Atheek Rahman, 35, son of Umer Musliar from Chemrakottur.
The police had questioned P.K. Basheer, MLA, whose name figured in the list of the accused for making provocative speeches. He was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court at Manjeri, and was remanded in judicial custody for two weeks.
