WASHINGTON: The U.S. Senate on Friday voted to restrict the hiring of foreign workers by banks that receive government bailout money while undergoing vast layoffs.

The legislation by Senators Bernie Sanders, an independent, and Republican Charles Grassley will require the banks to seek American workers before turning to hiring of foreign nationals. It aims at preventing the replacement of Americans by foreigners working under the H-1B visa programme, which allows employers to bring in workers for high-skilled and advanced-degree jobs. — AP
