DUBAI: Sixty persons were killed and 148 injured in two bombings in a central Baghdad square. Many of the victims were jobless Shias.
A suicide-bomber smashed an explosives-laden car into a police vehicle when many Shia workers were thronging the area in the early hours of Tuesday. Soon after, there was a truck bombing in a nearby area.
Eyewitnesses said the death toll was high because the bomber asked the workers to come closer, promising them work. Police said that around 150 kg of explosives were used. The eyewitnesses said the area was littered with mangled dead bodies.
There has been a surge in sectarian violence in Iraq, which neither the Government nor the American occupation troops have been able to contain.
