VIJAYAWADA: A 55-year-old woman died in a freak accident on National Highway no. 9 near the entrance of Pandit Nehru Bus Station on Friday afternoon.
A lorry laden with eggs lost control and fell on a Maruti car, in which she was travelling, resulting in her instant death. The car was mangled. While smithereens of eggs were strewn all around, the yolk spread all along the road.
The Krishnalanka police said that lorry entered the city from Prakasam Barrage and was on its way to Benz Circle. When it was crossing the bus station's entrance gate, a city-bound RTC bus from Tenali, coming in the opposite direction, swerved to the right to enter into the bus station. The bus driver neither gave an indication nor reduced the speed while negotiating the turning, the police said. No sooner had the bus taken a turn than the lorry driver noticed the car. As he suddenly applied a brake, the lorry lost balance and fell on the car crushing the latter.
Eedara Prameela Rani, who was sitting in the backseat of the car, died on the spot. Passers-by pulled out the other three passengers - Eedara Rambabu,60, husband of Prameela Rani, Navin,2, their grandson, and Amjad, the car driver -- from the wreck of the car. All the three sustained minor injuries. Efforts to rescue Prameela Rani, however, did not bear fruit. The lorry driver fled the scene.
The police said that Mr. Rambabu and Prameela Rani, who retired recently from ECIL in Hyderabad, came to the city to attend a marriage on April 11. After the marriage, they went to Tenali to visit their relatives. The couple, along with their grandson, embarked on their journey to Hyderabad in their car. They were actually planning to go to the US, where their daughter is living, by this month-end.
