Doctors have been deputed to districts where chikungunya is widespread
Victoria Hospital received 100 cases on Wednesday 2,524 suspected cases of chikungunya reported in Bangalore Urban and Rural districts
Bangalore: Even as the number of suspected chikungunya cases has increased in Bangalore, government hospitals in the city are facing shortage of staff as doctors have been deputed to districts where the disease is widespread.
On Wednesday, the outpatient department (OPD) of Victoria Hospital received nearly 100 cases of suspected chikungunya and two persons were admitted. Doctors there said that in the past week, they had examined at least three persons daily with symptoms of chikungunya.
According to official figures, 2,305 suspected cases of chikungunya from Bangalore Rural district and 219 cases from Bangalore Urban were reported as on May 23. But Health and Family Welfare Department officials said there was no possibility of outbreak of the viral infection in Bangalore.
"There have been no new cases in Bangalore after some persons from Gulbarga with suspected chikungunya were treated in a city government hospital three weeks ago," Health and Family Welfare Director M.G. Prasad said.
Doctors at the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals have seen a few persons with symptoms of the disease.
But senior doctors and postgraduate students at the Victoria Hospital are worried over the situation. According to sources in the hospital, a Government Order (GO) has been issued asking three doctors and three postgraduate students to go to Chitradurga to tackle chikungunya.
"We are struggling to handle the large inflow of patients here because of lack of doctors.
If doctors from Victoria Hospital go out of town, who will manage the patients here? The PG students have to focus on studies as their examinations are coming up," doctors said.
Most cases of suspected chikungunya reported in the hospital are from Bangalore, Pavagada, Tumkur, Kolar and Chitradurga.
No details in GO
The sources said the Government Order did not have any details on when the doctors should leave, whom they should report to, and where they should go.
Victoria Hospital receives on an average 1,200 outpatients a day. There are 55 admissions daily. But the 964-bed hospital has only 70 permanent doctors and 20 doctors on contract.
