DUBAI: Israel on Sunday agreed to a ceasefire after its troops failed to overrun Hizbollah fighters in southern Lebanon during combat that lasted more than a month.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert approved the U.N. Security Council resolution 1701 passed on Friday that called for the cessation of hostilities. Mr. Olmert, who took the decision during a Cabinet meeting, said the resolution would end the dominance of the Hizbollah in Lebanon.
