NEW DELHI: Union Power Secretary Veeravalli Sundaram Sampath, a 1973 batch IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, will be the new Election Commissioner. He will fill the vacancy in the three-member Commission to be caused by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N. Gopalaswami’s retirement on April 20.
The government has already announced that seniormost Election Commissioner Navin B. Chawla will take over as the CEC with effect from April 21.
The government has approved the appointment of Mr. Sampath and President Pratibha Patil’s approval is expected shortly.
A native of Vellore in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Sampath was born on January 16, 1950.
Though 59-year-old Mr. Sampath has service in the IAS only till next year, as he is being appointed as the Election Commissioner, he will have tenure in the Commission till the age of 65.
