CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Saturday re-elected Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar president for the second consecutive term.

At the annual meeting of the general house held at the SGPC headquarters in the Golden Temple, Amritsar, Jathedar Makkar polled 139 votes while his rival, Gurvinder Singh Shampura, 35.

As both candidates were from the Shiromani Akali Dal led by the former Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal, party secretary Daljit Singh Cheema announced Mr. Shampura's expulsion at the end of the meeting.

The other office-bearers remained unchanged, with Raghujit Singh Virk elected senior vice-president, Kewal Singh Badal junior vice-president and Sukhdev Singh Bhaur general secretary.

Two members from the opposing Akali factions were included in the 11-member executive, which had two new faces.

The former president, Jagir Kaur, conducted the proceedings of the house.
