  • Such a huge flow was last seen a year back
  • Water hyacinths were washed away

MADURAI: After almost a year, the Vaigai is in spate once again with the heavy flow submerging three causeways in the city by Wednesday evening. Despite warnings issued over public address system, curious onlookers thronged the banks to witness the rare spectacle, giving a tough time to the police personnel.

Many residents wondered how the river carried so much of `coloured water.' Such a huge flow was last seen in December 2005.

Office-goers and school students were awe struck at seeing the gushing water in the evening, as the river showed no signs of flood till the afternoon. They enjoyed watching plastic waste and wooden articles swirl around in the current. Water flowed at such a force that much of the hyacinth growth was washed away.

Since the flood alert was sounded by Tuesday midnight, city police and fire and rescue service personnel were on their toes from morning. However, unperturbed by the alert, some men and women were washing clothes standing in the middle of the river till afternoon. As the water level began to rise, they clambered the banks. The police had blocked traffic them on the causeways. But for this disruption, the floodwater did not cause any damage.
