Officials have alerted the administration in five districts
Theni: For the third time since 2004, the Vaigai dam is surplussing as the water level crossed the 69-feet mark. Public Works Department officials have issued third and final flood warning and released entire flow into the Vaigai at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
The flow into the dam was 5,073 cusecs, thanks to heavy flow in the Kottakudi, Vaigai and Mullaperiyar rivers and heavy showers at dam site on Tuesday night.
A total of 1,930 cusecs, largest withdrawal during this year, has been discharged from the Periyar dam, as the inflow was 2,163 cusecs.
The officials alerted the administration in five districts and advised the people residing along the riverbanks to move to safer places.
Following maximum withdrawal and moderate rain in the catchments, the level in the Periyar dam stood at 134.30 feet.
The combined credit in the Periyar and Vaigai dams was 10,444 mcft.
The Sothuparai dam near Periakulam has been overflowing as the level crossed its total height of 126 feet. The inflow and discharge from the dam was 138 cusecs.
While the Vaigai dam recorded 75 mm rainfall, Veerapandi and Uthamapalayam recorded 37 mm and 22 mm rainfall respectively.
